Sens On Ice

There are still plenty of chances to see the Sens Minor Bantam team on ice this season. The Minor Bantams square off against the Eastern Ontario Wild at the Bell Sensplex February 2 at 7 p.m. Next, they play the Ottawa Junior 67’s February 4 at 7 p.m. in Sandy Hill Arena, followed by their final game of the season February 11 at Earl Armstrong Arena. They’ll face off against the Ottawa Junior 67’s at 7 p.m. The Sens Major Bantams are up to their shin pads in exciting playoff action. Quarter-final competition, against the Outaouais Intrepide, is underway, with upcoming games February 4 at 1 p.m. at Beckwith Arena and February 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Bob Guertin Arena. Go Sens!

The Sens Minor Midgets are ending the season on a high note, thanks to a strong performance at the Peterborough Midget Tournament of Champions January 20 to 22. In their first game of the tournament, the Senators faced off against the top-ranked Toronto Marlies. Several of the Marlies players, including Josh Ho-Sang, Connor McDavid, Roland McKeown, Daniel DeSousa, Jaden Lindo, Jeremiah Addison and Michael Cramarossa, are touted to go in the first round of the 2012 OHL draft, so the stands were full of spectators, there to see the top guns. But it was the Sens who put on the real show. The teammates from Ottawa played their best game of the season, working together to give the Marlies some real competition. The elite Toronto team managed to slip in just two goals in the first period. The Sens held them to 0-0 in the second and just one goal in the third. Goalie Doug Johnston had a phenomenal game. The Marlies wound up winning the tournament, beating every team they played, including the Ottawa Junior 67’s – 3-1 – in the final.

In the second Peterborough game, against the Burlington Eagles, goalie Alex Hajjar helped the team to a 6-3 win. The next match was a 1-1 tie against the Whitby Wildcats, followed by a 4-1 loss to another elite team, the Chicago Young Americans. The Minor Midget team’s final game of the season is February 7 against the OHA Mavericks at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata. Game time is 8 p.m.

In Major Midget news, “The team is looking forward to the last part of the season because we have an excellent opportunity to (do) very well through the play-offs,” says spokesman Mike Dawson. “We could finish 1-4 depending on how we play. We have many games in hand on teams ahead of us.” The next game is February 2, versus the Outaouais Intrepide, at Robert Guertin Arena. On-ice action starts at 8 p.m. The last game of the season for the Major Midgets is February 21 versus OHA Gold. The two teams face off at 8 p.m. at the Bell Sensplex.

Major Bantams Give Back

The Major Bantam team landed a spot in the Ottawa Citizen newspaper December 25, under the headline Spirit, hard work and generosity delivered by group of talented Bantams; The definition of teamwork. Through the Ottawa Mission, players helped provide Christmas for a needy family with three children. Guided by coach Gregg Kennedy, they learned a life lesson about accountability and giving back in the process.

Major Bantam Team takes Kitchner Blueline Tournament!

The Major Bantams travelled to Kitchener November 25-27 to participate in the Kitchener Blueline Tournament.

During round robin, the team met up with the Niagara North Stars, Cambridge Hawks, Brampton Battalion and Brantford 99ers teams.
At the end of round robin play, their record was 3-1 which placed them 2nd in their pool to advance to the semis.

The team met the Huron Perth Lakers in the semis and sailed to a 6-3 win to advance to the finals against the Ottawa Valley Titans.

It was a hard-fought battle between the two Ottawa teams who have yet to play each other in the regular season.  Going into the third period, it was scoreless. With minutes to go in the game, Ian Johnston (assisted by Daniel Porter and Brandon Zullo) put one in the net and that was all the team needed to take the 2011 Kitchener Blueline Championship.

Congrats to all the boys on a great weekend of hockey and congrats to both teams: You made Ottawa proud!

Sens Ahead of the Game in Addressing Concussions

Heads up! The Senators AAA Hockey Association is taking direct action to deal with concussions.

To that end, players and parents recently had the opportunity to attend a concussion seminar presented by Dr. Kristian Goulet. Clinical supervisor of the Concussion Education Program for the Sports Legacy Institute, Dr. Goulet has trained with leaders in the field at the renowned Concussion Clinic at Children’s Hospital Boston.

K-Goulet
Dr. Kristian Goulet

His October presentation covered treatment of concussions and the downside of untreated head trauma/ mild brain injury. It’s part of the Senators’ concussion management program, which includes mandatory neurocognitive testing of all players. In addition, Dr. Goulet has drafted a return-to-play protocol for the association.

New this year, the proactive concussion program was developed by board member and Minor Midgets’ trainer Brent Daniel and it is the focus of a feature – AAA Senators introduce baseline testing for concussions – on page four of Centre Ice minor hockey newspaper.

ODMHA Approves AAA Hockey for Ottawa

The Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association has voted to make AAA hockey a permanent part of the hockey landscape in the Ottawa area. The vote, by the ODMHA Minor Council which includes representatives from minor hockey associations across the Ottawa area, was unanimous.

“I am grateful for the support the AAA Pilot project received today from Minor Council,” said Andy Baird, the chair of the Steering Committee which oversaw the three-year AAA Pilot Project. The move puts the Ottawa area on an equal footing with the rest of Canada, which has already adopted a top tier of minor hockey.

“I am very thankful that the AAA program is a go,” said Kevin Giroux, a forward with the Major Bantam Eastern Ontario AAA Wild. Giroux is entering the all-important minor midget year next year, when players are eligible for the OHL draft. “This gives us the opportunity to continue to play the game we love at the highest level and it will challenge those of us who are committed to continual improvement,” said the 14-year old resident of Rockland.

The ODMHA introduced AAA hockey in the Ottawa area three years ago on a trial basis. The new league has thrived, and players, fans and parents have been impressed by the elite level of hockey since the pilot project was established. Earlier this season, the Minor Midget AAA Wild showed they could compete with the best teams in North America when they won the prestigious Bauer Invitational AAA Invite Tournament in Chicago.

Baird is happy with the endorsement from the ODMHA. “It shows that we have done a lot of things right over the last three years, but the job’s not done yet,” he said. “There is still a lot of work to do to set up a permanent structure and a governance mechanism for the AAA league, and to ensure that every level below AAA melds as well as possible so that all players develop and enjoy hockey at their appropriate skill level,” he said.

The vote by the ODMHA makes AAA hockey permanent starting with the next season. Over the coming months, the ODMHA will revise its operating procedures to incorporate the new AAA league into a permanent structure, establishing policies on affiliations, governance of AAA zones, and other issues that must be addressed. One of the top priorities will be to make changes to ensure that the Major Midget level remains viable. Several teams, including the Wild, have struggled to retain 16- and 17-year old players, since they have the option of playing junior hockey starting at the age of 16.

“The challenges started immediately after the vote today and will keep us busy until the puck is ready to drop on our new season,” said Baird.
